Ma Yin Lam
I am Ma Yin Lam, a year 2 student from the faculty of arts. I am outgoing and caring; meanwhile, I welcome all challenges and unknowns that I encounter in the university. Therefore, I joined numerous activities in my freshman year, including Arts ambassador and Common Core consultant. In the following academic year, I will become academic advisor to share my intriguing university experiences and convey helpful information about course selection to freshmen. Thanks to the school, I got a huge improvement in my communication skills, leadership and problem-solving capabilities. Most importantly, I become more confident in supporting freshmen, classmates, and non-local students. In the following university years, I am looking forward to more opportunities and challenges!

Topic of InterestsI am interested in numerous topics, especially, Hong Kong-related issues. I always share my thoughts about cityscapes ad architecture styles on social media; I created a video about Man Wah Sun Chuen in my Common Core course in the last semester. I also interested in local traditional cultures, such as gated with craved patterns and Cheongsam. Furthermore, I am passionate about Cantonese songs. Because of the passion of local culture, I joined a program that co-arranged by Common Core and ARUP called “Urban Futures: Hong Kong with Arup.” My duty was making 20 postcards with my teammates for representing potential socio-cultural-political development of the city. Apart from local culture, I am also open-mined for any topics from other countries, including idol industries in Korea, art culture in Spain and linguistic features of different regions.
Things want to achieve by joining the programmeI want to become a peer tutor in “Survival Cantonese”; I positively believed that I could fulfil such duty successfully. Language can be a barrier for non-local schoolmates to blend into a new place, so I want to help them to familiar with our Cantonese and Hong Kong culture. Apart from basic Cantonese communication, I will also convey them some conventional slangs, such as “娿哿” and “笠糯.” They are just for fun; they have been disappearing in our daily conversations. As a university student, I think what we have achieved in our university is not just for ourselves but the society. It is my responsibility for preserving and inheriting Cantonese; most importantly, I wish to share our culture to non-local schoolmates.
